Or..The Deliberate Disenfranchisement of the Democratic Party Base.

When I was a Democrat there were certain things I was sure of. These things were issues I believed there to be applicability in connection with party ideals. To be a Democrat was to be Pro-Israel, Pro-Equal Rights, Pro-Women, Pro-Choice, Pro-Civil Rights, Pro-Gay Rights, Pro-Working Americans,  and Anti-War. Under the big tent of my understanding this was the party that took the higher road, on behalf of the little guy, the underdog, the average Joe. In my mind, these standards were morally correct, fair and equal to all; compassion, equality and the walk on that lofty road were all part of these recognized principles.

     Then, I woke up. It was 2008 when I was startled from my slumber of political unconsciousness. I had been resting peacefully in the knowledge of how those filthy Republicans had George W. Bush in place with his neo-con henchmen to destroy our country. I knew them to be a bloodthirsty crew, bent on killing our children in war, I understood them to be haters of women being treated like adult people able to make their own decisions, and they were of course the biggest bigots on the planet, working at destroying every possible minority in existence. Peggy Sue Got Married–by oowawa


If you’re old enough, you remember the song–one of the greatest of the 50′s, a huge hit: “Peggy Sue” by Buddy Holly, from the year 1957.  “Peggy Sue,” with its simple lyrics, really rocked, and evoked every teenage boy’s dream of the perfect girl: “pretty pretty pretty pretty Peggy Sue….”  But in 1959, on “the day the music died,” Buddy Holly went down in a plane crash.  Among his last minor hits was a reprise, “Peggy Sue Got Married.”  The song wasn’t a big hit, and it didn’t rock as hard as the original. It was, in fact, the epitath for a lost dream and a swan song for the great rock and roll era of the mid-50′s.  Peggy Sue got married!  How dare she!  What nerve–to exit my dreams and take up a life in the mundane world as a housewife with someone else!  And so the romantic teenage dream dies.  As Kathleen Turner as “Peggy Sue Kelcher” would phrase it in the 1986 movie of the same name: “Peggy Sue got married.  End of story.” Continue reading
