“…A Falsehood Wrapped In A Fallacy,” And More News

That would be the description WaPo’s Opinion writer, Dana Millbank, used to describe President Obama’s recent speech in Ohio. Wow. “…a falsehood wrapped in a fallacy.” Gee, Dana, tell us how you really feel!

Mr. Millbank is not alone. Heck, even MSNBC hosts were not impressed with Obama’s speech, so you KNOW it had to “stink,” to use Mediaite’s word. Yikes. Not sounding so good for The One, is it?

Back to Dana Millbank. He goes on to explain just what he means by that assertion:

[...] The falsehood is that he has been serious about cutting government spending. The fallacy is that this election will be some sort of referendum that will break the logjam in Washington.

Fallacy first. “Both parties have laid out their policies on the table for all to see,” Obama said. “What’s holding us back is a stalemate in Washington between two fundamentally different views of which direction America should take. And this election is your chance to break that stalemate.”

“Smoke And Mirrors”

From the Album: Making Mirrors-Gotye:http://gotye.com/

You’re a fraud and you know it But it’s too good to throw it all away Anyone would do the same
You’ve got ‘em going And you’re careful not to show it Sometimes you even fool yourself a bit It’s like magic But it’s always been a smoke and mirrors game Anyone would do the same
So now that you’ve arrived well you wonder What is it that you’ve done to make the grade And should you do the same?
(Is that too easy?) Are you only trying to please them (Will they see then?) You’re desperate to deliver
Anything that could give you A sense of reassurance When you look in the mirror
Such highs and lows You put on quite a show
 All these highs and lows
And you’re never really sure What you do it for
Well do you even want to know?
You put on quite a show
(Mother)
Are you watching? Are you watching? (Mother) Are you watching? (Mother)
You’re a fraud and you know it
And every night and day you take the stage And it always entertains
You’re giving pleasure And that’s admirable, you tell yourself And so you’d gladly sell yourself To others (Mother)
 Are you watching?
 (Mother) Are you watching?
 (Mother) Are you watching?
 (Mother) Are you watching?
Such highs and lows
You put on quite a show
 All these highs and lows
And you’re never really sure What you do it for

Well do you even want to know? Yeah you put on quite a show.

(Lyrics by Wally De Backer –)

Here is a song that played last night, ever so briefly on the second season opener of “Suits”; you may remember his voice from a video/song I posted months ago with the singer, Gotye and a lovely woman singer, Kimbra, being painted, and unpainted(Somebody That I Used to Know); with a post I wrote in reference to how elections tear friends and families apart. Anyways; this would be the song I would choose for the Obama campaign-on lyrics alone.(The artist is not involved in our elections). Nevermind I think this artist is amazing(he has a great Peter Gabriel & Sting vocal and a fantastic crew of artists producing some of the most imaginative videos I have seen in quite some time), The song’s bass track is reminiscent of “Take 5″ by David Brubeck. Just an album cover video, with the lyrics listed above; the description is delicious-it could apply to anyone of us.

Campaign music doesn’t ever seem to get its due, and I think I know why. The voters in the upcoming election don’t get to pick the music. Campaigns don’t pay attention to the value of music to people in general; we use it constantly, marking very interesting, intimate and important moments in our lives. Music moves us. If you want to see how out of touch a campaign is, just look at the music they pick or how they us music or artists to influence the voter. This is the Hollywood bleed over. Sad to say I can never listen to Jon Bon Jovi again without picturing him riding on Airforce One, sucking up. Retch. Just another to add to the list of the out of touch elite who insists they are for the little guy. I don’t criticize their method of earning money, but I sure don’t like the influence of art in any form used for an election. If I had my way, I would get rid of all the bundlers. How about you?

*The video in the background at his concert is very creative and interesting (I think Teak will dig this, especially the implications at the end)

Political action committees

Federal law allows for multiple types of Political Action Committees.
  • Connected PACS: The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act prohibits corporations and labor unions from making direct contributions or expenditures in connection with federal elections. These organizations may, however, sponsor a “separate segregated fund” (SSF),[18] known as a “connected PAC.” These PACs may receive and raise money only from a “restricted class,” generally consisting of managers and shareholders in the case of a corporation and members in the case of a union or other interest group. In exchange, the sponsor of the PAC may absorb all the administrative costs of operating the PAC and soliciting contributions.[19] As of January 2009, there were 1,598 registered corporate PACs, 272 related to labor unions and 995 to trade organizations.[20]
