News Of The Day *Open Thread*
There are all kinds of things happening today. One catching a lot of air time is Wisconsin County Sheriff David Clarke, Jr. putting out a PSA to the residents of his county. The following clip also has responses by a gun instructor, and an anti-violence advocate:
Wowie zowie. The Mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett, is none too pleased with this PSA, either, I might add. He, too, claims this will make people vigilantes, and claimed this about Sheriff Clark:
[...]Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett lashed out at the ad. His office said in a statement: “Apparently Sheriff David Clarke is auditioning for the next Dirty Harry movie.”[...]
To that assertion, Sheriff Clark said this:
“Personally I’ve never seen the Dirty Harry movie — but if that’s all the mayor can come up with, that’s pretty weak,” he said. “I think that what’s going on in the city of Milwaukee on his watch is kind of, you know — it looks like he doesn’t have much to say, he doesn’t have much to offer and that’s okay.“My job is to protect the public,” he said. [...](Click here to read the rest.)
I didn’t think this was what the Sheriff was saying at all, a call to be a vigilante or “Dirty Harry.” Rather that in one’s own home, one needed to be willing, and able, to protect oneself. And as I have said, personally, guns scare me. But if you are going to be a gun owner, I sure as hell want you to take a class on firearm safety. Anyway, how did you take the sheriff’s comments?
Another big story today is, of course, the interview with President Obama and Secretary Clinton, if one can really call it an “interview.” Judging form the comments by Democratic pundit Kirsten Powers, I would say not. Powers was on “America’s Newsroom” this morning in a panel with Tucker Carlson, moderated by Martha McCallum. McCallum asked about the lack of questions asked by Kroft of Clinton and Obama. In response, Powers said this:
“I mean, it really was something you would expect from a State-run media. It was that level of, uh, propaganda, as far as I am concerned. First of all, “60 Minutes” was transparently being used as a campaign advertisement, which, if they are okay with that, then okay…”
She went on from there, and really hammered “60 Minutes” for a pathetic level of journalism from a program that is considered fairly good in terms of investigations. She specifically mentioned the claim by Obama – again – that Al Qaeda is being dismantled, when it CLEARLY is not. Here is the link to view the video of the discussion this morning with Powers, Carlson, and McCallum.
Heck, even on the same program, the difference was highlighted between the complete softball lobbing by Kroft, and the segment on Lance Armstrong. Don’t take my word for it. Here is the link to the “60 Minutes” interview with Clinton and Obama, and here is a link to the preview of the Armstrong discussion with Travis Tygert, CEO of USADA.
Just from that brief clip, you can see there is a WORLD of difference between how the two interviews went. One was hard hitting, the other was a love fest. Oh, and not for nothing, but for Hillary Clinton to claim that she couldn’t figure out were they were so really different was a slap in the face to those of us who supported her, worked for her tirelessly, gave her tons of money, endured numerous verbal attacks, some physical, and more. Seriously? No real differences?? Hell, even Steve Kroft made this comment:
[...]I spent time with both of you in the 2008 campaign. That was a very tough, bitter race. And I’m going to spare you reading some of the things that you said about each other during that campaign….]
Uh, yeah, no duh! It was bitter, contentious, and there was a WORLD of difference between the two candidates.
I sure as hell hope she’s not counting on people like me to support her should she run in 2016, because it ain’t gonna happen. She caved, to the DNC, and to Obama, the man who treated her in an incredibly sexist fashion, stole her policies for his own (with the aid of the MSM), called her AND her husband RACISTS, and so much more. Never mind that we were just a TAD upset when the DNC stole lawfully cast votes for her and gave them to Obama, or when Donna Brazile claimed they were going to do the nuclear option with Florida to ENSURE Clinton didn’t get the numbers she needed, or when the DNC ignored the rampant caucus fraud, especially in Texas, and on and on I could go. But to essentially dismiss all of the crap we took in 2008, all of the support and hard work by so many of, to now claim there were no real differences is just insulting. And revisionist.
Blech.
On another note, Monday marks the 27th anniversary of the Challenger Shuttle disaster. A sad day, indeed, as we remember those astronauts who were lost. May we always remember them, remember their service, their sacrifice, and the sacrifice of their families…
And now, I turn it over to you. What’s on your minds today?
Sheriff Clark is quite a brave man. To publicly encourage people to be responsible for themselves and their own safety is an act of courage in a country gone entirely mad with self-imposed helplessness and associated victimhood.
As for Hillary, that train left the station. She is responsible in so many ways for our current mess created by our current President in name only. That single truth alone is enough for her to be denied the presidency. However, many of her decisions (a GREAT many, actually) are antithetical to the well-being of this country. She will not get my vote–ever and I would work for any opponent of hers, make no mistake.
I didn’t and don’t like being thrown under the bus for a politically correct token of a President, Hillary.
No kidding, huh? How DARE he suggest personal RESPONSIBILITY for one’s own safety! Why, that’s CRAZY talk, I say, just crazy! Ahem.
Yeah, I am not partial to being thrown under the bus by Hillary, either. ALL of us here who supported her took a BUNCH of crap for it. I had a credit card hacked, a friend had her disability called into question, all KINDS of crap happened to us. And she just tosses it off as if it was no big deal? She can bite me.
Since she can bite me, too, she’s going to be quite busy.
LOL – true enough, Ferd.
Yeah, the only Hillary I love now is Hillary Farr on “Love It Or List It”!
Mee Tooo Ferd!
I recieved this froma friend of mine and got a good laugh this afternoon!
Subject: Retirement is worth it..
Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day, Winnie Mae and I went into town and visited a shop. When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.
We went up to him and I said, ‘Come on, man, how about giving a senior citizen a break? He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him an “asshole”. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn-out tires.
So the wife called him a “shit head”. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing more tickets. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote.
Just then our bus arrived, and we got on it and went home. We always look for cars with “OBAMA 2012 stickers. We try to have a little fun each day now that we’re retired. It’s important at our age.
LMAO. Take that, Obots!
I didn’t watch the Obama-Clinton ass kissing fest on 60 minutes; respect for my stomach and all. I can’t stand the little snipets. Also the hypocrisy ooze comes thru the t.v. and nearly ruins the screen.
I got to 60 mins late yesterday and almost lost my dinner when I saw who was on..At first they had a closeup of Hillary talking, so I watched for a couple…then they panned out…
Hey guess what guys Im getting really good at channel switching LOL>
LOL – I bet! I’m good at hitting the “Mute” button with lightning speed when Obama pops up blathering away!
Regarding Obama’s comment today about going shooting all the time: How many times do you think wikipedia has been accessed today to find out just what kind of animal a “skeet” is? Just sayin. The presser with carney was funny, kind of like kids asking, “So do you have photos of Santa Clause?” ROFLMAO. We are a safer nation now that our CIC has killed all the “skeets” at camp david. That makes Obama a real skeeter alright.
Them Skeets are bad news. So glad Oblahblah took them out with his little red shotgun, likely a .410 youth style.
ROTFLMAO – that is too funny, “what kind of animal a ‘skeet’ is”! Ahahahahahaha!
I loved when one of The Five said that we have photos of Obama doing EVERYTHING, like flossing his teeth, but there are NO photos of him skeet shooting??? Uh huh…
When they get done killin them skeets, they can go on a snipe hunt!
ROTFLMAO – you’re killing me!
I hear them “Snipe” are pretty good eatin…
Right after possum, they be tasty.
ROTFLMAO – as you would say, Kat, “Stop it!” You’re killing me!
We could have us a mess o some greens and taters, and some snipes, goodl old snipe stew! Hell we could even add some maters! Yummm, Yummm Wheww Doggies! Vittles.
Bet you know personally, and got them yourself…
Thank you RRRA…
Many years ago I too was against guns…
Yet over the years I have realized how we cannot just depend on the people out there…When they are good they are good, but when something screws up in the system it seems to really screw up. Add that up with the many many cut backs most police departments have had we need to know how to take care of ourselves…
Back in 2003 I had my car stolen…Don’t ask me why but I dialed 9 11 but I did. After about a dozen or so rings I looked at my watch..It was over 7 mins after I looked at my watch before anyone answered the phone…Sure glad it was only my car and not me.I mean how long does it take for a killer to beat you to a ??? or rape you or ???.(I know I should not have used 911 for that..but if anyone did answer, they could have quickly told me to dial the police office. H3LL I didnt even get some crazy recording that we all hate. Hey this was in Fresno..
Now that I live in a rural area I have found that after 10 or 11 our 911 calls are dispatched to either a town about 45 mins away, or a city that is 2 and 1/2 hours away…Oh goodie…So now I will get someone who wont know where the H3LL I am or the area…
As I have told you guys I am working slowly but surely on getting a gun…Took the Concealed Weapons class and will take some more classes before buying…What I did find interesting is that a whole slew of the stores that sell guns in a bigger city from me has been and are offering gun safety classes free since the Newtown mess, Last time I heard it was on a weekly basis…It is probably based on demand whether it is weekly or not still.
When seconds count, K, cops are minutes away.
And therein lies the problem with any sort of gun control. Besides, I can take care of myself. If I was good enough to carry a weapon in the service, I’m good enough to own one.
A few months ago while I was walking back from the mail box I was looking at my block…
I all of a suddent realized, the houses are quite a bit further apart than in LA…The good part is I can play my music, tv and etc louder The bad part is that I could probably be screaming my lungs out and they probably would not hear…
True story…About 2 days later, just outside the small town just a few miles from where I live there was a shooting…Last report was that they were going for the Washington border..The police were keeping a eye out on the road that my house is on the corner of..
I will say I did not sleep well that night… I can’t tell you how many times that I checked the locks on my doors and windows that night…Hey I know…Yes I would get up thinking lady, you just checked them 30 mins ago, and if they were locked then they would still be locked again…
Would a gun in the house have made me feel safer…Who knows..
Strange as it may seem but the gang activity in the rural areas of Northeast Oregon and Southeast Washington is as bad if not wose porportionally than some of the big huge cities like LA…
That’s why Kat and I have two dogs in the house–they’re great alarms.
Got a bit of a giggle reminiscing to my last dog…
She was the greatest alarm, but as soon as I opened the door or it was opened she ran up the stairs and was under the bed still barking her head off LOL…
I have to say, I am not at all sorry that DJ is going to be a LARGE dog (they estimate between 80 – 90 lbs), and he looks like s German Shepherd/Doberman mix. He is developing a big bark, too. Of course, he is as sweet as he can be, but he does let us know when people are here (as does Dorothy, but she stays away from the people).
Like you, Kin, no one would hear us. The house next to us is a good 100ft away, and it is all woods on the other side.
And holy smokes abt the shooter – I would have been scared, too. I am sure I would not have slept well, either!
Excellent points, y’all. As you know, we also live in a rural area, and have been discussing the possibility that we may need to purchase a shotgun, and take some safety classes. The police are a good 10 – 15 minutes away, so it isn’t like they could be here in a timely fashion anyway.
Kin, I appreciate the journey you are on. It is a hard thing to go from being afraid of guns and not wanting one to preparing for “carry, conceal.” But yes – we are ultimately responsible for our own safety…
Very interesting abt the gun stores providing gun safety classes. That is a good thing. And a GOOD thing that they are free.
When I heard it on the news I was quite impressed…You have to remember these were the same gun shops that had their gun sales like triple or more..Maybe they just wanted to make sure all were safe in the area…
From what the news said..the gun stores were reporting that they sold more guns in the month after Newtown and Obama’s speeches of gun control than they had in the last couple of years…
I think even the national news was saying that many gun stores in the country, and on the internet were saying the same…
LIke Kat said it used to be part of her schooling…Others have told me the same..So why not..
Hi Kat, May I ask you “What are you waiting for?” You are going to want a weapon to learn to fire one. It’s better to learn on your own piece than a rental or a training gun. But that’s just my two cents worth. I’ve had my kids shooting since they were about 12 and they now out shoot me. Gotta say “it’s a good feeling to know they can handle themselves if a situation arises – Oh, they are both girls. Hey when you get ready we can go “git us some Snipes”.
Just to interject, Katmoon DOES know how to shoot. It is Kin who is learning abt guns.
I’m enjoying your comments, Doodledandy! Love the one abt the snipe…
Doodle, I have my 357(15 years now) and am not sure what I want to get for my conceal and carry…Ferd got me the 357 as a gift when we were dating. Now his Eagle is something that I do want to try just for fun. As far as the shotguns, etc, I have to wait on the arm/shoulder thing to get fixed before I go back to those. I agree it is always better to have your own weapons, and if you are trying stuff out a lot of ranges or good friends are more than happy to let you see what they have “feels” like.
Back in my liberal days I gave up my weapons; since my brain grew back, I went back to what I grew up with. I always knew how to shoot and did when I was young as well thanks to Mimae, I just let it go when I was in La-la land. You remember! ROFLMAo-pitiful.
Its me(Kin) doesn’t know beans about guns, so I am taking it a bit at a time…due to two reasons…My old fears and cost…I have a feeling that if I was with KAT for a week I would have a whole slew of knowledge..Heard she really knows her way around guns…
By the way welcome to the porch Doodledandy…
Oh, THAT’S an idea! Kat, you can run a little camp for us! Teehee! I can see it all now. Oh! Maybe we can learn how to shoot from horses and stuff, too – wouldn’t THAT be fun?!
And yes, DoodleDandy, welcome! Any friend of Kat’s is a friend of ours!
The lady that told me about the Concealed weapons class does the balloon shooting competition from a horse
I could really imagine Kat doing this…only problem is she would have to give up her minature horses cause i think they would be a bit too small…
Oh, wow – cool! That’s so neat!
And ROTFL abt Kat doing that from a mini-horse…
K-I used to work at the Benton County Sheriff’s dispatch emergency services center for 911,( I was a “911 Operator) and I think you may also be served from their area, still quite a distance.
I think you have the right method of going about learning about guns, taking the classes and going about the business of educating yourself on guns. I was raised with them, and hunter safety courses were a standard in school when I was growing up.
Kat if it got relayed to them that would be probably even worse..cause they are a good 40 or more mins away and across the border …
“I sure as hell hope she’s not counting on people like me to support her should she run in 2016″
Nor me, Amy. There isn’t anybody in the DEM fantasy world that I could support, and the Republicans aren’t looking that great either. ANYBODY who carried Obama’s water is a non-starter.
Exactly Oowawa; I think I may write that into my advanced directive I swear regarding my mental state and voting. I have no desire to vote Dem every again; and whatever republican I choose to support had better not be some kind of ass-kisser, shooting off their mouth, while hitting themselves in the head with a hammer. They had better be consistent, and fearless; of course honesty doesn’t hurt, but I want to stay with reality at this point. I disagree with the likes of Bobby Jindahl and some others that think there has to be a huge change in the Republican Party or that Conservatives need to revamp their values. They need to explain them btter without fear.
Amen to that, Brother Bunny! Right there with ya!
I have heard so many comments about Hillary going to run in 2016, its sick….
The Media were gushing all over her testimony and handling of the embassy mess, saying what a great president she would make…
Just looking at how the Dems stole the election this year I would not put it past the Dems to keep on stealing elections…Maybe that was the deal Hillary and Obama made in 2008…I do believe that Obama and Hillary made some back door deal in 2008…and it was not just for the SOS position…
FYI—I was leary of Hillary when she threw the primary…and when she became SOS I swore I would never ever vote for her anything even dog catcher….If one ever sees a vote by me for Hillary it is very much a fraud, and you can start looking for my dead body..
Question…Anyone know why the military would be training like this in Miami????
Whats up…was the question asked on another forum…
Machine gun fire from military helicopters flying over downtown Miami Fl.
Huh – good question, Kin! Maybe because we are going into Niger? Because of Algeria? Egypt? Mali? The good ol’ US of A? Who the hell knows? We have a president who INSISTS that terrorism is in decline when we know damn well it isn’t (hence the troops abt to go into Niger). So, no telling. But, YIKES…
Just when you think you have heard it all…
Funeral procession for Pennsylvania man stops at Burger King drive-thru, Mourners at a Pennsylvania fast-food fan’s funeral wanted him to have it his way, so they arranged for his hearse and the rest of the procession — to make one last drive-thru visit before reaching the cemetery. David Kime Jr. “lived by his own rules,” daughter Linda Phiel said. He considered the lettuce on a burger his version of healthy eating, she said.
FYI —Mine would be a pint of Ben and Jerrys New York Super Fudge Ice Cream..
