Flip Flops *Open Thread*
Ugh – yet another day of President Obama putting himself on the tee-vee blaming everyone else (i.e., Republicans) for what is going on in this country. This time around, Obama surrounds himself with First Responders in his bully attempt to strike out Sequestration. Yes, the president, Democrats, and the media, have now made this ALL the fault of Republicans.
Except it wasn’t Republicans who came up with Sequestration. It was Jack Lew in the Obama White House who came up with it. And it was President Obama who said in November, 2011 that he would veto ANY attempt to do away with automatic spending cuts. Of course, that was before his debate with Romney in which he claimed that there was no way Sequestration would actually go through. That was when he tried to make it seem like he had nothing to do with this idea. Heck, he flat out made that claim:
“First of all, the sequester is not something that I’ve proposed. It is something that Congress has proposed. It will not happen,” Obama said. “The budget that we are talking about is not reducing our military spending. It is maintaining it.”
What a crock, and what a flip flop. He was for it before he was against it (click here to read the assessment of Poltiifact on this issue.). Seems to be a common theme.
And then there was this flip flop from Rep. Joe Salazar (D-CO) on an incredibly stupid assertion he made during discussion of gun control (h/t Ferd):
[...]Salazar, arguing in favor of disarming college students, said Friday on the Colorado House floor that women fearing rape may suddenly and haphazardly ”pop a round at somebody.”
“It’s why we have call boxes; it’s why we have safe zones; it’s why we have the whistles — because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop … pop a round at somebody,” Salazar said. [...]
There is so, so much wrong with this statement, I scarcely know where to begin. Oh, yes I do: This was an incredibly offensive, patronizing, condescending remark by Salazar. Oh, sure – a call box or whistle is REALLY going to help prevent a woman from being raped – that is if we little ladies can even be trusted to know when we are under threat to BE raped, mind you. Otherwise, who knows? We might just be shooting off our guns willy nilly at every person who may, or may not be, a rapist. We little ladies just CAN’T be trusted to know when that is going to happen, and we CERTAINLY cannot be trusted to carry a firearm responsibly. Oh, nosirreebob, that is just too much for our lady brains to comprehend.
And since when does a call box or a whistle PREVENT a rape or sexual assault? Even if there is a working call box available, is the rapist just going to stand by while the woman uses it, and waits for help to arrive? Really? I think not. Sure, they may be helpful if a woman does not want to walk alone to her car or to class, but in the midst of an attack, just HOW is that call box gonna help her unless she rips it off the pole and hits the guy with it? Uh, yeah.
Again I say, UGH. And I am not the only one who feels that way:
[...]Despite Salazar’s support for giving women “the whistles,” his comment that women are more likely to shoot and kill people because they fear being raped has already sparked controversy in his home state.
Republican state Rep. Polly Lawrence, for example, responded with umbrage to Salazar’s assertion “that women don’t know when we’re going to be raped, that [women] can’t recognize when there’s an inherent danger.”
Salazar apologized – kind of:
“I’m sorry if I offended anyone,” Salazar said in the statement…(Click here to read the rest.)
“IF” he offended anyone? He thinks there is wiggle room there or something? If so, Rep. Salazar, let me clarify it for you – you DID offend women with that remark, It was a sexist-as-hell remark to make! You essentially said that we were incapable of discerning a real threat, AND that we would just open fire at the least little concern for our safety when we COULD use whistles, call boxes, and “safe zones” (how “safe” are they, I wonder?) is just offensive as hell.
Kind of like that whole “Life of Julia” paternalistic, patronizing, condescending BS propaganda that the Obama team put forth in 2012, and which was, ASTOUNDINGLY, embraced by Democratic women. I will never cease to be amazed at how far back we have gone in this country, but not without the willing aid of women ourselves. Astounding, and disturbing. I guess that’s another flip flop, eh?
Whether Sequestration should go forward or not continues to be up for debate, but it is that the President is blaming everyone but himself, and his then Chief of Staff, Jack Lew, for creating this budget cut when, as I noted, it came out of his own office.
And Rep. Salazar’s flip flop after his incredibly sexist comment falls flat for me. But maybe that’s just me.
I am sure you can come up with more examples of the rampant flip-flopping that seems to be the hallmark of our government these days. Or you can talk about whatever else you want! It’s an Open Thread.
